Trey's Blog: Skunk Season On Texas Highways

Skunk Season On Texas Highways

If you drive much on Texas Highways in the spring you will soon discover that those  black and white fur balls on the road are obstacles   to be avoided. We drive a good distance to town each moring and one day last week I counted at least 7 of the little boogers on the pavement in about an 8 mile stretch!  After a while you learn the secrets of squashed skunk navigation through trial and error but here are a few of them  to remember anyway.

  • Never ever ever ever run over a skunk dead or alive.
  • Never, ever go back to check on one if you do!
  • When you first spot one in the distance  turn off  the air conditioning and vent fan and roll up your windows.
  • Avoid the squash site at all costs!
  • Once you pass the squash site , roll down windows and air your car out anyway , Because I guarantee you will still get a goodly portion of the odor in you vehicle no matter what precautions you take.

Trey, I was showing houses this last Saturday and even though I know I dodged the roadkill the smell lingered with us for quite sometime.  I have been seeing a LOT of them lately; all roadkill of course.

I learned this one the hard way a couple of weeks ago, when I was helping our friends who had organized a 200+ mile relay race.  I had to carry some road cones in my van.  One of them was sprayed by a skunk and it took DAYS to get rid of the smell from my car.

Ewww. What a topic. I don't think I have to be educated to avoid hitting skunks! ;)

They really are cute!  We once had a pet skunk named Peaches. She hung out with the dogs and we all went on walks together!

I think they are cute but I keep my distance.  We had one get trapped in the garage once.  We got it out by cutting up an apple and placing it a piece at a time right out the door.  It followed the apple pieces out.

Hey Trey, now that is an interesting post :), never thought I would see one on precautions for skunks on the road, but it's good advice.  Driving up to my lake house on Lake Limestone from Katy, the "sweet smell" of skunk is a common sent.  Happy Easter, Liz

Our black lab was barking the other night; he got sprayed by one of those little boogers. We washed him several times with soap and water and even tried vegetable juice and vanilla. He still smells a little. Infact, he is barking right now, so maybe that little booger is back again, hope not.
