As part of my plan to better myself, I try to be disciplined in my bible reading. Today....it was Luke, Chapter 6. Here's the quote for the week...

Are We Hacking At Branches?

This post by John Mulkey is absolutely outstanding! In a nutshell...... It says so much about our society and how we all have to step up to the plate.

After more than a year of the Great Recession, many are pointing fingers at politicians, bankers, Wall Street tycoons, lobbyists, and at their neighbors for making financially irresponsible decisions. And what have we gained? Little of consequence.

Many seem to believe the problem doesn’t lie with us, but with a vague and indeterminate “them.” Few are willing to take personal responsibility for the nation’s problems and find it much easier to lament their plight, throwing up their hands in defeat. But they fail to acknowledge that: No single raindrop believes it is to blame for the flood.

Neither politician nor lobbyist sees their complicity in the corruption of our political system. The teen stealing a candy bar doesn’t view his actions as a symptom of growing dishonesty. The unfaithful spouse cannot envision endangering the sanctity of marriage. The classroom cheat, careless driver, dishonest businessman; all see their actions as separate and unique. But it is the combined actions of individuals that create our society.

And it’s not just our deeds; by failing to take action we are also responsible. When we—each of us individually—fail to hold politicians and business leaders accountable; when we fail to contact them to express our concerns, we encourage dishonesty and indolence. While only a small percentage of voters ever contact their senators or representatives, 100% of lobbyists do. And few take the time or effort to “vote with their feet,” and refuse to patronize corrupt businesses, while those same businesses spread their tentacles ever deeper into our daily lives.

Henry David Thoreau said: “There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root.” Are we just “hacking at branches?” Have we misdirected out energy, noisily shaking our fists while avoiding our responsibility? Let’s strike the root and truly make a difference.

Walk This Way – Increasing a Home's Value Through its "Walkability"

I recently read the following blog from Claudette Millette and really thought it ranked as a good reblog so here it is! Thanks Claudette!

A new study came out this month which shows that a home's "walkability" can have a profound effect on its value.

The report, "Walking the Walk: How Walkability Raises Housing Values in U. S. Cities" by Joseph Cortright, was comprised of 94,000 real estate transactions in 15 major markets. In the study, it was determined that in 13 of the 15 markets, higher levels of walkability were directly linked to higher market prices.

Of the areas tested, the differences in property values for above average Walk Scores ranged from $4,000 to $34,000.

Apparently, even in this turbulent economy, there is a tangible value that can be assigned to convenience.

In the past, real estate value has been measured primarily by square footage, number of bedrooms, bathrooms and whether or not the home has a finished basement, a pool or other amenities. It's now becoming clear that consumers are also placing weight on how close they are to restaurants, schools, parks, shops and other destinations.

The fact that the price of gas has the potential to skyrocket is also part of the equation.  The less we have to depend on our cars, the better off we are.

The program uses a Walk Score Algorithm, which works by calculating the closest amenities to any particular address. It then assigns a score from 0-100. A score of 100 indicates the best walkability -  A score of 0 is the most car-dependent.

It's been known for some time that walking is good for our health. It may now also have an effect on our home's value.

Disgruntled Realtor Makes Fox News, Part 2!

Everyone should watch Chris Ann's interview with Neil Cavuto on TV. She did a super-duper job of handling herself. Way to go!

So I finally got a copy of the Neil Cavuto appearance. Here it is. I think most everyone I know missed it, so here's a chance to take a look in your own time.

I got to bump elbows with Chris Wallace, Ted Olson and Ann Coulter while at the Fox News studios. What a neat experience. Glad I didn't go with my first thought which was, show up in jeans and a t-shirt... change while I'm there. Better to have shown up in a suit. First impressions mean a lot.

11 Different Ways To Blog

When I first read Jason Sanders List ....well I thought to myself this is why I told someone today " I have learned more on Active Rain in 17 months than I have learned elsewhere over the last 10 years."

I just read a great post by Jon Zolsky, What To Blog About...And How. In it Jon shared some great basics and he got me to thinking about all the different variety of ways to format a blog post. As I read some of the blogs on Active Rain, I'm amazed at the quality of writing and formatting that I see here and the level of creativity that goes into many of these "Works of Blart" (I think I just made that up).

Here's a few creative ideas that I've seen where writers stepped outside the box to convey information in a different way.

1. The Interview- I love the interview. It gives your blog an injection of flavor in the form of someone else's thoughts and opinions. It's a great way to network and build good will with those that you respect. Who wouldn't be flattered to be interviewed about their business, their charitable cause, or their event? Find someone who interests you and "pop the question"! Mary McKnight gives a good example of an interview blog HERE.

2. The Review - So many things can be reviewed. Introduce us to your inner critic. How did you like the latest book you read? Go to any good restaurants lately? What stood out at the last event you attended? In addition to reviewing items, events, and experiences, you can review blocks of time. What happened to you today, this week, this month, this year? What changes have transpired? What insights do you have? Russel Ray blew my mind with his recent ActiveRain Week in Review. I know it's a lot to aspire to, but why not try to be that good?

3. The List - When I need some inspiration I always turn to the list. You're reading a list blog right now! Sometimes I feel like the characters in High Fidelity (Top 5 songs about death - Go!) But seriously there's always more than one way to do things well, most people find a list to be helpful. Castellum Realty put together an awesome list of Active Rain bloggers who also use Twitter. 4. The Rant - If you're fired up, passionate, and need to set the record straight, the rant might be the right blog for you. Rants can be controversial, so be prepared for a hot and fiery comment stream. Make sure you cool down and double check you aren't violating the Terms of Service before you hit the publish button. Remember sometimes you say things in the heat of the moment that you may regret later, cooling down before publishing will ensure that the rant is in the right spirit and that you don't damage your reputation. 5. The Motivational- I think this is my favorite type of blog. The motivational blog gives its readers perspective, enthusiasm, energy and strength. If you've got something positive and inspirational to say, please share it with us! My favorite Motivational blogger is Gary Woltal. If you're not subscribing to his blog, you must not want to have a good day. Check it out HERE.

6. The Prediction- Many times this blog is based around current events. Do you have have some insight into where policy decisions or changes in society could take us? These lines of thought often make for interesting blog posts. Matt Heaton made some pretty bold predictions about 2008 HERE. But was he right?? I was on the edge of my seat!! 7. The Hypothetical- Otherwise known as the "What If". It can be fun and mind expanding to take a possible scenario and disect all of the potential implications of that scenario. What would it mean for your business if gas went to $5.00 per gallon? What if the Govt Actually taxes those AIG scoundrels 100% on their hefty bonuses....what could that possibly mean for you and me? Bob Stewart asked the question What if we could license ActiveRain out...... It's a great whimsical read, check it out!

8. The Debate - Every issue has 2 sides. It can be fun to tackle a issue and air out both sides of the argument, or perhaps just one side and encourage your readers to provide "counter point". There's nothing wrong with a spirited exchange of ideas, as long as the exchange is respectful. Michael Tarabotto presents two opposing arguments on Credit Default Swaps HERE.

9. The Satirical- Ok, sometimes people and situations just present too big of a target. As the folks on Comedy Central demonstrate nightly, there is no shortage of material for this brand of blog. If your parody and satire is well written and gets people to double over in laughter, don't be surprised if you get a lot of subscribers and back links to your blog. Moving Careers put together this Video Parody. It's pretty funny, check it out!

10. The Poll/Survey - The key to this type of blog is to pick a highly publicized and controversial piece of news and present it in such a way that people feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and feelings. If there's not enough controversy, there won't be much interest in participating, so keep it hot! Steve Loynd shares a poll he developed to measure consumer confidence HERE. Ooooo is it up or down?

11. The Contest - It's a human weakness, we can't resist free stuff! If you can offer a prize to your readers, don't be surprised if your flooded with traffic, comments, and entries. The key to this is to provide a compelling prize and carefully evaluate the entry criteria. If you make it too challenging, people might shy away - again human nature. This of course is in no way a thorough or complete list of every creative type of post, but it may be a starting point for you to incorporate some new ideas into your blog. Keeping ourselves interested in blogging in turns keeps our readers interested in what we have to say and makes blogging sustainable, so change it up every now and then, have fun and keep blogging!

Photograph of Orbs?

I am always playing around with my digital camera. Recently while shooting some sunsets I kept shooting until dark thirty. Then while reviewing the photos I saw some spots on a few photos where the flash had gone off automatically because it was getting dark. So I kept shooting some more photos and the spots went away. I cannot explain it. I enlarged a few photos, and enhanced some also. My wife says they are orbs? I know nothing about this . I thought it was maybe a dirty lense but they "orbs" went away without cleaning the lense. Can anyone tell me what an orb is?

A Quiet Place To Meditate, Think, Ponder, and Pray, Do You Have One?

When ever I have had a stressful day it is always nice to retreat to my special place and think about life, family, work, or whatever. If the problems have been coming at me like a hoard of insects,

and I am spinning my wheels, then I go to that special place to relax and clear my head.

For some folks that place may be their media room in front of the big screen with the state of the art surround sound. For others it may be their local gym strapped to a top of the line treadmill. For others it may be at the end of a fishing pole or the seat of a Harley.

For me the special place is a 30 minute walk in one of the meadows in our backyard. In that brief thirty minutes it seems, by observing God's beauty in nature, all my troubles seem so insignificant and everything seems right with the world for just a little while.

I know that God made these great things, that their beauty was placed here for his pleasure and ours.

And I also know that there are problems lurking back at the office.... just waiting to be delt with when I leave my quiet place.

That little 30 minute retreat makes those problems seem less of a problem. Do you have a special place to go to re-group and think about your world?

Time to Move Those Plants Inside!

Looks like we are fixing to get our first real cold front in here in central Texas. Lots of folks including yours truly have potted plants all over the porches and in the yard. Luckily we have a small green house room in our barn so I will get out the dolly and wheel barrow this afternoon to wheel everything to the green room. By the way be sure and water everything in your pots and in the ground before it gets too coldthis week. Plants get stressed by the cold ...but combined with dry soil they can really be hurt!

Texas Aggie Baskeball !

Well it is finally that time of year! Basketball season has begun at Aggieland. Last night we attended the Aggie - S.F. A. game at Reed arena. The Aggies won and they really had to earn it, but the season is young and we have enough good and eager players that I feel it will be a good season.

I love this photo as it says a lot about Aggie spirit. The yell leaders, the 12th man sweatshirt , and if you look closely the little Aggie with the pacifier in his mouth leaning on his dad's shoulder. Lots of Aggie moms and dads start bringing the kids to the game early in their lives....they kids and babies love it!

Habitat Home Built By All Women

Today the Bryan College Station Habitat for Humanity dedicated the completion of another fine home in the wonderful Angels Gate Community, . This home was unique in that it was sponsored by the Circle of Women group and was constructed by all women . The soon to be new owner,The Searcy Family was very happy today as you can tell by all the smiles. It is always inspiring and emotional to attnd these dedications.

One of the great traditions is for all those who attend the ceremony and those who worked on the home, to all sign the back side of the disappearing stairway door for the attic.

The circle of women are to be congratulated for all they did to make this dream a reality and blessing for the Searcy Family!

Giant Mushrooms

Every year about this time I spot these giant mushrooms in a small isolated area in Brazos county, just outside of College Station, Texas. I don't believe they are rare or anything special ... just interesting to say the least. We have spotted larger ones.

I placed my boot next to it to give an idea of its size. Not sure if this is edible but if it was .....it would feed quite a few folks!

Can Laughter Make You Work Better?

I think laughter is like a lot of things in life ...breathing, water, food. You will eventually expire without any. I also think it is like resting. After you are satiated you feel refreshed. I work much better if I have had my share. Be sure and get your daily dose.

Last night we had a small group of friends over for a pot luck dinner, kind of like a pre -Thanksgiving get -together to help get stomachs in shape for the "real deal on Thursday. ..... A practice session if you will.

This was a great little gathering with standard didiscussions about work, pets, family and everything else in life. We eventually ended up at the dining room table and after the last bite was taken we must have sat there forever, telling stories and jokes and laughing.

One gentleman had a very outstanding and unforgettable laugh. The reason I know this.... is because my African parrot immediately picked up on i this special laugh and repeated it. Now, I will be hearing that laugh indefinitely , perhaps even for the rest of my parrot's life anyway. He is 6 years old and could make 60 to 80. But that's ok...... He already repeats my mother-n-law, my wife and other important memories and fun things in our lives. He is an "organic recording devise". And I think he even has his own distinct little laugh. ;o)

Are You Ready To List Me? Please.....Please!

Potential Real Estate Closings in America right now are kind of like leaves on a tree in winter. There just aren't a whole lot of them left on the tree right now.

But you know not all trees lose all their leaves at once. if you can look closely enough through the fog of our national economy, you might just find some of those "evergreen trees" just waiting for you . The leaves on those trees aren't really leaves. They are needles. And FSBOS aren't your ordinary homes either. I believe they are calling you and they are calling you right now....

Can you hear them calling? "I am a salable home. My owner is trying to sell me. He has taken good care of me and he's kept up payments on me all this time.. He gave my yard a haircut each week. He painted me and fixed me when I sprouted a small water leak. He is a really good guy! But you know.....when my sewer stopped up he called the plumber. When he remodeled my kitchen he called a builder. When he refinanced he called his lender. What I don't get however, is.... why now that he is trying to sell me... he won't call a professional. So I guess the phone works two ways and I am hopeful one of those professional Realtors ® will call him soon.

It has been almost a year now and I am getting worried that potential buyers will get the wrong impression and start offering very low prices for me. How degrading! I am better than that ! After all I'm not just any old cheap run of the mill home. I know that the professionals know real class when they see it. Do you? Will you please call my owner?"

Empty Nesters

I don't know where all our blue birds go every winter but we really miss having them around They have great personality and rule the roost in the neighborhood.They do a great job of keeping the grasshoppers under control in the summertime. I suppose they head down a little further south to stay warmer. Evey now and then we'll see one this time of year . Maybe they just hide out during the winter time. Not too many hoppers to dine on right now .

Now is actually a great time to build and put out nesting boxes for bluebird so during spring they are ready to be occupied by a new family. Place the box in the open on a fence near a meadow or your gardens. These birds are great for controlling insects.

Average Days on Market For Bryan-College Station Real Estate Market

The statistics for our MLS in the Bryan-College Station Market don't look too bad for the area, as of the end of October...particularly the category of "days on the market". Apparently the Average days on the market for October is one of the lowest in the last 3 years for the area at 102 days. Home sellers and agents in the area will be pleased to hear this data . Days on the market is one of the key indicators of the local market.
